7/16" Floating Dock Line
Premium Floating Dock Line for Recreational Boats Up to 24 Feet
Available with 9", 12", or 15" Loops
Hot Boat Ropes 7/16" Floating Dock Lines are designed for everyday recreational boating, offering a strong, easy-to-handle line that works especially well for lake boats, bowriders, fishing boats, pontoons, runabouts, and other boats up to approximately 24 feet.
Made from 100% solid-braid polypropylene, our 7/16" dock line floats, stays soft and flexible, and is easy to coil, store, and handle around the dock.
With an approximate tensile strength of 2,600 lbs., the 7/16" size offers an excellent balance of strength, flexibility, and easy handling for many recreational boats.
Why Choose a 7/16" Dock Line?
The 7/16" diameter is a practical choice for boaters who want a dock line that is strong without being bulky.
It works especially well where smaller cleats make larger-diameter rope unnecessary or harder to manage.
The 7/16" size provides:
- Easy handling
- Good flexibility
- Comfortable grip
- Good compatibility with common recreational boat cleats
- Strong everyday performance
- Easy coiling and storage
For many lake boats, 7/16" is an excellent all-around dock-line size.

Built for Everyday Docking
Dock lines are among the most-handled ropes on a boat.
You use them when:
- Pulling into a marina
- Stopping at a fuel dock
- Tying up at a courtesy dock
- Visiting a restaurant dock
- Securing the boat overnight
- Loading or unloading passengers
- Rafting with another boat
- Tying up at the launch ramp
That is why we make our dock lines to be comfortable in your hands and easy to manage.
A good dock line should be more than just strong.
You should also be able to quickly grab it, coil it, pass it to someone on the dock, and secure it without fighting stiff or oversized rope.
Heavy-Duty Sewn Loop - 9", 12" or 15"
The loop is one of the most important parts of a finished dock line.
Hot Boat Ropes uses heavy-duty webbing and reinforced sewn construction to form the finished loop.
Depending on the line size and intended use, we use multiple X-Box stitch patterns to create a strong, secure connection.
The finished loop is ready to place over a dock cleat, piling, or other appropriate attachment point without tying a permanent knot at the end of the rope.
Why Use a Floating Dock Line?
Floating dock rope offers several practical advantages for recreational boaters.
Easier to See
If a dock line falls into the water, it stays at or near the surface, making it easier to locate and retrieve.
Helps Reduce Prop-Fouling Risk
Because the rope floats instead of sinking immediately beneath the boat, it can reduce the chance of loose rope dropping toward the propeller.
Proper line management is always important around a running engine or propeller.
Easier to Retrieve
A floating line is much easier to grab from the water than a rope that disappears beneath the surface.
This can be especially useful around docks, marinas, and launch ramps.
What Length Dock Line Should I Choose?
Dock-line length depends on your boat size and how you normally dock.
A useful starting point is:
Bow and stern lines: approximately two-thirds of the boat's length
Spring lines: approximately the full length of the boat
For many boats in the 16- to 24-foot range, 15- to 20-foot dock lines are very practical for everyday use.
Longer lines can be useful for:
- Spring-line duty
- Larger docks
- Awkward cleat locations
- Rafting
- Backup or spare lines
It is usually better to have a little extra length than to discover your line is too short when you reach the dock.
How Many Dock Lines Should I Carry?
For most recreational boats, we recommend carrying at least four dock lines.
A more versatile setup is six dock lines:
- Four primary bow and stern lines
- Two longer lines for spring-line duty, unusual docks, or backup
That gives you more flexibility when dock layouts or conditions change.
